Roger Mayweather on the still uncertain future of Floyd: “He has to do what makes him happy”

Thursday afternoon was just another day for Roger Mayweather. Despite recent rumors of his nephew and star pupil Floyd Mayweather possibly walking away from the sport as well as an ongoing legal court case, the shrewd trainer went about his business without a care in the world.

After entering Floyd’s personal boxing gym on the West side of Las Vegas, Roger could be found in the center of the ring hitting the mitts with four aspiring amateur fighters. Taking his turn to walk through the routine with each hopeful, Roger was definitely in his element.

In his days Roger has also worked with the likes of Laila Ali and Joan Guzman but outside of Floyd there aren’t any other big names on his roster that stand out. When Floyd is gone Roger gives his undivided attention to a variety of fighters and it’s possible that boxing is one of the few routines that he is comfortable with.

Upon exiting the ring following his mitt work Roger was presented with some printed out material regarding the Mayweather clan. As he scanned the articles over Roger cracked a smile as he read his own personal thoughts on paper in relation to Floyd's future. The names Pacquiao, Martinez, and Berto all whistled through his lips as he seemed to be genuinely interested in how his words came across. What should be noted is that a few days after that initial interview with Roger, Floyd threw the sport a curveball of his own.

Roughly a week ago young Mayweather claimed he was eyeing a one to two year break from the sport and ever since then people in the boxing community have been trying to get to the bottom of his proclamations. Roger appeared on The Boxing Truth this past Saturday to dismiss any notions of Floyd walking away from the sport but today he seemed less adamant about the situation and still a little bit confused.

“I don’t worry about that,” Roger stated. “He’s the one who said he was going to retire. I don’t know why he would [retire] because he just came backs from a 21-month layoff. I mean he has to do what makes him happy. I don’t really know why he would retire. There is so much money on the table it would be hard to retire.”

Roger dismissed any notions that perhaps Floyd was getting too involved in his other businesses and hobbies in life, noting ‘It’s always been business and boxing’ for the Grand Rapids fighter. Roger also pointed out that Floyd has always taken care of his body and fully believes he is still in his physically prime despite his advancing 33 years of age.

At the end of the day all we can do is speculate on how the latest story in the life of Floyd Mayweather will unfold. For his part Roger seems to be brushing off any negativity related to the developments and closed out by claiming that the last thing he will ever do is to reach out to Floyd to find out what is going on in his mind.

“I see him when he comes here. I never follow him. Whenever he comes here I will see him. When he starts training, he starts training. It’s not like I call him and wish him well, we don’t to any of that. It’s not like that, I’m always right here.”

Love him or hate him, Roger Mayweather is his own man.
